At the Intersection of History and Art

Whether you’re a history buff or an art aficionado, Central SC has plenty of museums to pique your interest. Unique attractions, including the only U.S. museum entirely dedicated to steeplechase horse racing, as well as the local heritage museums, tell the exciting stories of our communities. The South Carolina State Museum is the largest museum in the state and is located in the heart of the Region. The expanded and renovated SCSM is the first of its kind in the U.S. to have, under one roof, an onsite and online observatory and classroom, a 55-foot digital planetarium dome and theater, a 4D multi-sensory theater, and an outdoor viewing terrace. Exhibits include South Carolina art, natural and cultural history, and science and technology spread over 225,000 square feet. The Columbia Museum of Art is South Carolina’s premier international art museum with collections of European, American, Asian, and modern and contemporary fine and decorative art, welcoming more than 150,000 visitors annually.

Live Music and Shows

Hoping to catch a live show in Central SC? You’re in luck! Whether you’re into opera or rock n’ roll, we’ve got it all. The Newberry Opera House is a historic venue still operating today to host a variety of performances. The Tin Roof features local musicians and events with southern-inspired bar food. The Colonial Life Arena, consistently ranked a top 10 music venue in the state, brings headlining musicians and festivals to the Region. The South Carolina Philharmonic and Columbia City Ballet have both brought exquisite cultural experiences to the Region for over 50 years and counting. Family-friendly theatre performances are available for kids of all ages at Columbia Children’s Theatre and Columbia Marionette Theatre. Newberry Community Players and Chapin Theatre Company are dedicated to putting on the best theatrical performances and film nights.
